The storyالقصة

A theatre is kept alive by the people who use itالمسرح يبقى حيًّا بالناس الذين يرتادونه

Le Colisée opened on Hamra Street, Beirut, in 1945, one of the city's grand cinemas. It closed during Lebanon's war years and stood abandoned for decades, its hall filling with dust and debris as Beirut's single-screen cinemas disappeared one by one.

This documentary follows Kassem Istanbouli and the Tiro Association for Arts team as they begin bringing the building back to life. It opens on the first days of rehabilitation, with team members and volunteers clearing rubble by hand beneath the old stage curtains. It follows the restoration as the hall slowly takes shape again. Along the way, the people who did the work speak about what it meant to them.

“I feel very proud to have taken part in the rehabilitation.”
A participant, speaking in the film

The restoration was interrupted by war. In 2024, while the building was still a construction site, its doors opened to families displaced from the South. The theatre became a shelter before it became a stage. On 13 September 2025, Le Colisée reopened as a free public theatre.

Directed by Istanbouli himself, the film is both a record of the restoration and part of the work. For Istanbouli, restoring a building does not mean preserving a ruin. It means giving the space back to the people who use it.

Kassem Istanbouli

Kassem Istanbouli (born 1986, Tyre) is a Lebanese actor, theatre director, filmmaker and cultural activist. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Lebanese University and founded the Istanbouli Theatre troupe in 2008 with Fine Arts students, taking interactive theatre into streets and public squares. The troupe has since performed at festivals in 21 countries, from Tunisia and Algeria to Spain, Chile and Brazil.

In 2014 he founded Tiro Association for Arts. Through Tiro he has helped rehabilitate five historic cinemas in South Lebanon, North Lebanon and Beirut and reopened them as free public cultural spaces, the Lebanese National Theatre. His practice rests on one principle: art is a right, not a privilege.

Alongside directing and performing, he leads participatory theatre with children, young people and displaced communities. During the 2024 war, he kept his theatres open as shelters, with workshops continuing inside. In 2020 he founded the Arab Culture and Arts Network (ACAN), which now connects more than 700 members.

For Istanbouli, a restored building is not a monument but a living place, kept alive by the people who use it.
